The Will of God

How do we know God's will for our lives? How do we know we are making the right decisions? I have often pondered on these questions at different times in my life. I found this quote the other day and thought I would share.

"Obedience to every command puts me on the track and keeps me there. Decisions of course must be made, but as in railroad, so in life - a block signal, a crisis, is lighted only where there is special need. I may not always be in sight of a 'go' light, but sticking to the tracks will take me where the next one is. Understanding the will of the Lord is believing Him, that He will - in all situations where I have obeyed - make that way His own way, effectual for eternity." - Jim Elliot, quoted in Shadow of the Almighty pg. 128

This is very well said and very encouraging! It is so hard to know sometimes what His will is, but when we're faithful and 'on track' we can trust that He won't let us go astray.

Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome quote! I love to look back at my life in the times that I questioned God's plan, and then see where He put me now, and how perfect His plan really is!

Love Jim Elliott and I love this quote!

This reminds me of one of my favorite verses:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:5

It is a constant reminder for me to be aware of thoughts that go through my head and whether or not they are leading me into the will of God or taking me out of it. I always have to remind myself that the battlefield of my soul is my mind. I am guilty of getting pretty worked up about things I really want to do but are probably not what God has planned for me...

Always love reading your encouraging posts. :)

Knowing God's will for our lives and desiring to be following it is certainly hard. The quote you shared describes it all well. Have a good day!

I like his railroad analogy.

I need to stay on His tracks and not veer off on my own.

I love this!!! It is so true...sometimes the only thing we can do is just stay on track and wait for God to show us where to go or what to do.

Amen! Obedience is one condition that He requires of us. We must submit, not to a destination, but to His path (tracks).

Ah! I've just been chatting to God about what to do next, after finding myself graduating from university without a CLUE where to go next. This has helped me so much - and, Breanne, your comment summed it up so great! I'll definitely be reminded of that when I need to make decisions - will it lead me closer to God, or further from Him. Fantastic. Thank you, ladies!! x

I liked this quote a lot, I agree with it! A lot of people think that the "bad" or evil stuff that happens to us is God's Will, but if we look at the New Testament, we see that Jesus HEALED. If it was God's Will that we be blind, He wouldn't have healed the blind man, or the lame, or the sick. God's will is basically, the way I see it, ....God's Word....His WAY. Yes Gods ways can be mysterious, but I think we are given free will to make choices, and a lot of times, they aren't godly ones.

Thanks for the post!!!

I'm new to your blog and I love how beautifully you express your faith! :) It's amazing to hear. I struggle with this every day. I have so many questions and concerns about tomorrow, next year, the next ten years... but we cannot worry about the future. We need to just trust that God will help us down the path He intends for us. :)
