If you can wield a glue gun...

Ok, so I think it's finally time to reveal what I was crafting last Saturday. I love reds during Christmas, but I'm not so crazy about using them in our decor for the rest of the year. My poor coffee table needed some non-red love. I loved the look of  the earthy-looking decorative balls found at Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel, but there is no way I was going to pay so much for decorations. Even at Target they are pricey.

(Here is a store bought version.)

So ladies, if you can wield a glue gun you can make these little guys. And when you are done you will look upon your creation and smile because of the money that is still in your pocket...or your hubby's. (Wink!) It's incredibly easy too. Pinky promise.

 Here are the supplies:
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Moss (Michael's has lots to choose from)
  • Hot glue gun (and glue of course!)
  • Assorted sizes of Styrofoam balls
  • Decorative twig balls
  • Mod Podge (not pictured)

I started the moss balls first. All I did was hot glue small pieces of moss until it was completely covered. Easy as pie.

The yarn ones were a little bit more tricky...but not much. I tried hot glue at first, but it didn't work out so well. But have no fear, my trusty Mod Podge was near!
(In my craft drawer that is!)

I covered half the Styrofoam ball in Mod Podge (that stuff is the bomb dot com) and started wrapping the yarn around from the top.

Sometimes the yarn didn't want to stay in place, but after a few times of yelling "YOU WILL WORK FOR ME!" it finally listened. Thank goodness!

So in a little less than an hour, I made a new centerpiece for our coffee table. I just love all of those textures together. Next up is the dining room!

LOL - I made the SAME thing this week - yet after yelling - you will stay put and NOT getting out the mod podge (didn't think of that) I gave up and did the ball of twine look with mine. Yours look great! I might need to try the moss ones :) Here are mine - http://greendoordesigns.blogspot.com/2011/01/tutorial-yarn-vase-filler.html

those are unbelievable!!! I am in love, and after searching the aisles of walmart (okay okay, not the best store for home decor.) I came up empty with ideas to do a non christmas centerpiece for our kitchen table. But this is a wonderful idea, and I may just have to head out to Michael's and purchase the materials!!!
